The parts of a Venn diagram

Each circle in a Venn diagram represents a set. Where circles overlap, the sets share elements (the intersection); where they do not overlap, elements belong to only one set.

Intersection and union

The intersection of two sets A and B is written A ∩ B (elements in both). The union A ∪ B is everything in either. These two operations are what Venn diagrams make visible.
